As a ridiculed, dark Black girl growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, seeing Nichelle Nichols on Star Trek helped me know that I also was beautiful, smart, and capable of great things. While I had many positive influences, who countered the racism and colorism that tried to crush my dreams and spirit as a young person, Ms. Nichols as Lt. Uhura was key.
